Can Dogs Eat Salami?

Who doesn’t like salami? Salami is the best pizza ingredient ever. It has been made for many years and dates back to the Middle Ages in Italy, where curing meat was devised as a method of preserving it to last longer. Can something so tasty also be good for our dogs or us? Of course not. Dogs are hardwired to love meat. But the sodium and fat in these products are toxic to dogs. And dogs can’t read.

Salami Is Manufactured.

Modern commercially produced salamis and other cured meats, such as bologna and pepperoni, contain ingredients added by the manufacturer to make the product more palatable and appealing as well as preserving it.

Salt - Salt is common to all curing solutions. It is the only requirement for a product to be considered cured and plays an important role in the production of processed meat.

Phosphates - Phosphates are used in the production of salami to retain moisture, soften proteins and inhibit rancidity, resulting in improved texture, juiciness, and flavor.

Water - Water serves as a carrier for salt and other ingredients allowing uniform distribution of these substances throughout the meat. It is also added to enhance the tenderness, juiciness, and overall palatability of the product.

Sugar - A variety of sugars, including molasses and other sweeteners, are commonly used in the production of processed meat and salami. Sugars used range from sucrose (cane or beet sugar) to dextrose. Sugar improves flavor and disguises the taste of salt.

Spices - Certain spices act to inhibit bacterial growth and oxidation. Among the spices most commonly used in sausages are red, white and black pepper, allspice, bay leaf, mustard, garlic, anise, and cinnamon.

Fat - The fat content of hot dogs, bologna, and most salamis is limited by the USDA to a maximum of 30 percent.

Mechanically Separated Meat - After conventional hand deboning, machines are used to separate the meat sticking to bones, which increases the yield of meat obtained from carcasses. The common level of usage for mechanically separated meat (MSM) in sausage is 5 to 10 percent of the weight. However, USDA regulations permit use-levels up to 20 percent MSM from beef, pork, or lamb if MSM is listed in the ingredient statement on the label.

Extenders and Binders - Certain sausage products may contain extenders and binders, alone or in combination, such as dry milk , flours, cereals, etc.

A variety of compounds are added to fresh and dry salami in regulated amounts to combat oxidative rancidity. The most common of these antioxidants are BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), and propyl gallate.

The above is true for most commercially prepared meats, including salami, hot dogs, bologna and pepperoni.

Still Like salami?

Salami is made for humans. A dog’s digestion is not the same as a human’s. The dietary requirements of dogs are not the same as those for humans.

The three culprits are salt, fat and sugar. Salami and other styles of sausages are not made for dogs. Particularly cinnamon, turmeric and parsley. Some fruits are toxic. Cheese and dairy products and nuts are all products that are also highly likely to cause health problems in your dog.
